This is Kevin Kirk, founder of The Heavy Metal Shop --- an SLC institution. If you've spent any length of time in Salt Lake and you don't know Kevin, you haven't really seen SLC. Kevin maintains a solid relationship with rock and metal heavies from Slayer to The Supersuckers to Michael Dean Damron (frontman for I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch In The House, one of my all time favorites), who he lined up to play a free, all ages set this Friday in his small shop before the real show a few hours later. Kevin has been peddlin' evil since 1987 and is a mainstay in the SLC music scene who does so much to keep good music in the ears of SLC's residents, including these free mini-shows with bands who're passing through. Swing in and pick up a hoodie or somethin'... Slayer always does.
Between the HMS set and the show at Burt's Tiki Lounge, I ran into a familiar chop outside Lost Art Tattoo and found Bolts homie Chris Graves inside gettin' prepped for some pain...
Then to Burt's to watch four terrible opening bands before Mike D went on... fully worth the wait. Mike somehow manages to sing the most heartfelt, southern-rock tinged, Americana-y, blues while avoiding all the schlocky, image-heavy, rockabilly bullshit that sucks so many workin' man bands down. Go check out his solo work, and definitely check out what he does with his band, I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch In The House... boot-stompin', harmonica riddled rock and roll that's perfect for whiskey.
Michael Dean Damron, from Portland, digs The Heavy Metal Shop so much he's got that shit tattooed on his bicep. That's how cool the joint is.
